Margie Winfield has been practicing law in North Carolina since 1994. Ms. Winfield began her legal career at Petree Stockton LLP (now Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton LLP), working in their litigation section. While at Petree Stockton, Ms. Winfield practiced principally in the areas of complex commercial and technology litigation, handling issues such as breach of contract, breach of fiduciary duty, misappropriation of trade secrets, unfair and deceptive trade practices, computer and software licensing disputes, and copyright, trademark and trade dress infringement.

In 1999, with it in mind to diversify her practice, Ms. Winfield left what was then Kilpatrick Stockton LLP to open her own firm, which she did that same year along with her partner, Don Harris, forming Harris & Winfield, LLP (which is now Harris, Winfield, Sarratt & Hodges, LLP). Since then, Ms. Winfield has continued practicing in commercial litigation, and has also expanded her practice to include both the litigation and drafting aspects of fiduciary, estate and elder law. In the context of fiduciary litigation, Ms. Winfield handles will caveats, trust disputes and guardianship disputes. On the estate planning side, Ms. Winfield drafts wills, testamentary and living trusts, living wills, powers of attorney and other planning documents. Ms. Winfield’s elder law and disability planning services include guardianships, Medicaid and SSI planning and applications, special needs trusts, and advance directives.

Ms. Winfield is a member of the Estate Planning and Fiduciary Law and Elder Law sections of the North Carolina Bar Association, and serves on the Estate Planning legislative subcommittee. In the community, Ms. Winfield serves as a board member of and fundraiser for a number of local nonprofits, and teaches Sunday School.

Ms. Winfield received her Bachelor of Arts, with Honors, from the University of Virginia in 1991, where she received the Waggenheim Memorial Scholarship and was Phi Beta Kappa. She earned her J.D., also from the University of Virginia, in 1994.

Ms. Winfield is married to Don Harris, and they have four children, Danny, Mike, Eliot and Peer.
